Haha I'm caucasian and people my whole life have said 'don't make that face' and 'you're going to need to put in more effort'. Now I just go 'I'm sorry, it's just my face'. I'm sure lots of old country grandparents would find me hilariously unfortunate 😅

For several years I worked in a music store owned by an older Asian woman. She was BRUTAL with her bluntness and honesty with the staff…and I loved it. It was hilarious. She never meant any of it to be cruel, she just thought it was the best way to communicate and she knew what and how she wanted things done. Our turn over rate with employees was so high though because they were mostly young white music nerds who didn’t know how to take it. During cold/flu season right before the holidays she would buy everyone a giant Costco pack of vitamin C drink mix and demand we drink it every day so we didn’t get sick during the busy season. She would personally ask us all every day if we had drunk it. If we said no she would make us one right there and watch us drink it. To her credit, I didn’t get sick. 😂

My next door neighbor was a Chinese tiger mom with her two kids - both "Wunderkinder" and studying at the Mozarteum university ... Their weekly schedule, which they had to adhere to by the minute, was rough, man. The boy was still one of the happiest children I've ever seen, but I've never seen the girl laugh once in all those years. I admire the determination. Moving to a foreign continent as a single mom with your young kids to get the best possible education for them takes some guts.

I love how these comments are like group therapy for kids of Asian parents. I remember doing my final wedding dress fitting (AKA my dream dress) and it fit perfectly. My mom and aunties were there. My mom busts out “that dress is pretty but you could lose 10 lbs” and all the aunties nodded in agreement. That one took a year of therapy to undo… 💕 Jimmy Yang for bringing some laughter to the pain 🙏🏽

@Gagex YES he IS. That is a FACT. Why live a live risking a fate you do not know? When believing in God is striving to have one you will not be afraid of? I mean have you ever eevver tried to pray to God? I mean really tried? If not why not? What's the point of shutting him out so fast? Anger? What is the root of your disbelief? Because God is an outright experience that can't be conveyed. It must be felt. If you haven't tried then you can say he isn't real. But you don't know.

@Mengsjd I understand that Okinawa is different from the other parts of today's Japan and it was once a different country, but I'd say tho that these all "Asian parents things" are not really a thing in the nation either. It's just a group of people, mostly located in an urban city or its suburbs, who believes in educations without thinking much about why it's important, resulting their kids frustrated. In fact, I grew up in a local city in Japan, and as far as I could see, there was only one kid whose parent(s) was(were) such. perhaps there were more, but even then, it'd be just a few. I do think that such a mindset is BS and it's not up to date to today's standard, but just don't take it as a Japanese thing.

My grandmother was Italian, manic depressive, alcoholic, gambler, and the worst narcissist you've ever seen. She's dead and gone now (thank the gods!), but she was so horrible I ended up with PTSD and in counseling for 3 years after living with her for the first 15 years of my life (My mom and I both lived in her basement apt after my parents divorced. We were broke, so it took that long to be able to move out on our own). I still have nightmares about her, but not as often as when she was alive. On the other hand, my former older neighbor is Thai. She is super sweet, and always treated me well. I told her I wished she was my grandmother, and she said I could be her adopted granddaughter! I love her so much. I love the Thai cakes she makes too, but those are just a bonus lol!

hahha yes i’m asian, and my mum called me ugly for most of my childhood and unfortunately now i can’t see myself as anything but that. it’s hard to believe someone means it when they call me pretty or beautiful even now. it basically destroyed my self esteem. i think it’s an asian problem, or perhaps i’m born with a too sensitive mind to be able to bear those words 🤪

I admit that Asian are generally okay with a lot of bad things parents do to their child because they believe parents love their kids the most. But those are narcissistic traits and traumatic to their children. Narcissists are not capable of loving anyone. Narcissistic parents in non-Asian countries say similar abusive things more subtly.

@Daniel Rumbacher Many Asian cultures are very traditional, which unfortunately often extends to things like spousal relationships and parenting: more often than not, the way they were raised is the way they raise their own children, and their relationship with their spouse mirrors the relationship their parents had 🤷🏻‍♀️

as a european i get why total honesty is a good thing in everyday life. but i never understood why asian parents treat their children this way. i wonder if there any socialogical books on why parents do this. do they think their children get more successful or what? :D

My Grandma would flat out say I was fat as a kid. I became self conscious and tried to diet. She'd get offended when I didn't eat much, and would stare intently when I did eat. When I asked why she kept staring, she said it made her happy watching family eat and enjoy her cooking - then would make me eat more! And still call me fat! 😭 Yes... my Grandma was Asian...

Ah yes. The funny thing was I was really good at Kumon to the point they gave me trophies and plaques. Even a Kumon diploma for finishing all the levels but is useless on a resume. It did make me real ahead in school for a while, but eventually others will catch up when they get serious in school. So idk the purpose of Kumon.

My mom sometimes looked at me and sighed, and said "why your eyes are so small? Your cousin has much more beautiful eyes." When I told my husband (who is not Asian) about it in my thirties, he was like: "How can you be blamed of your look? If anything, your parents are the reasons of how you look." I wish I could realize that when I was 5. And I'd be a different person. Yes, of course, I'm Asian. And I think Jimmy's parents came from the same region as my family. 😊

@Gabriella Gelir parenting is new to a lot of people and it's easy to make mistakes. I agree that these can be vicious cycles but the best we can do is try to break the cycle and find a good middle ground, because I don't think swinging all the way to the other side is good either. People need to be humble to an extent and be aware of how the world works.

I'm not Asian, but I can relate WAY too hard to that math homework bit xD I grew up home-schooled, and I ended up good at math because I was literally not allowed to do a goddamn thing until I finished a chapter of math homework and got it checked and corrected. Also not allowed to use a calculator until I got into calculus. That whole bit about rebelling and sneaking calculators hit way hard xD

As an African, a Nigerian to be precise, my parents buy us our Christmas clothes during July when things are cheap, and they buy us a big size knowing that we'll grow before December 25 arrived😂 and yeah it really suits well at first growing up, but now I'm old and fending for myself I look at what my parents did and can only say thanks 😂, the rich don't experience that type of stress , just buy at full price anytime 😂 Perks are, we get to choose the clothes ourselves tho 😅🤣

@RosalieMaryRose In tje real world it don't work that way. People say tnings. Deal with it. Social media platforms are trying their best to stop people from speaking and taling away their freedom of speech but it's gonna be hard. It's in the constitution for us to say what we want. Soemtimes it's hurtful somwtimes not.

@G Porr Honesty is good but don't you think we should not give comments unless we're asked? Why give comments about someone else's personal life or choices when they don't ask for our opinions. Also, someone peope think they are honest but actually being rude and judgment. There are differences between honesty vs judging and being mean. Ex: Saying "having this weight is beyond normal and it's not good for you" maybe honesty. But say "you're fat like a pig", or making fun of someone's appearance and weight is just being mean.

the appearance insult thing i 100% relate to born and raised in hong kong, my dad's a barber and my mom's a stay-at-home mom dad was surprisingly cool with it but mom absolutely hated it when i told them i decided to grow my hair out into a ponytail and especially since im a guy, she would make sure she never fails to remind me that i looked like a hobo/middle-aged hag with long hair every time i see her it took a while but luckily my family was never overly-stereotypical so they eventually accepted the fact that i was going to grow my hair out, whether they liked it or not, except my mom still goes on about my long hair to this day
